Main Highlights:
- IBF offered four paid channels FTA for the next two months
- DD Free Dish users may watch on the decrypted mode
- These channels will be available free to air on all DTH and Cable Operators for the next two months
The Prime Minister of India has announced a 21-day lockdown period to blow up the Covid-19 from India. For it to be successful, people are locked in their homes. In this free period, watching television is the best option for entertainment. Therefore, IBF members offer four free to air channels to broadcast to their viewers.
IBF’s statement to give free channels
In a statement, the IBF said that in the fight against Covid-19, the IBF stands firmly with the Government. The IBF said that “While the constituents of the IBF face significant uncertainties, given the impact on Advertising revenue for the industry due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we stand together to support the Government’s effort to help people in these difficult times. As there is a state of lockdown in the country and the Government has urged the people to maintain ‘social distancing’ and stay at home, four major broadcasting networks have come forward and decided to waive off all tariffs and charges for four channels for a period of two months,”.
The Foundation also said that “Sony run Sony Pal, Star India run Star Utsav, Zee TV operated Zee Anmol and Viacom18’s Colors bouquet channel Colors Rishtey will be available to all viewers across the country for a period of two months free of charge on all DTH and cable networks. The broadcasting fraternity feels that this will provide people who are restricted to their homes, wholesome entertainment and invigorating content and will help provide relief during the period of lockdown.”

Will the channels come to DD Free Dish?
Following the IBF announcement, DD Free Dish users are confused as to whether these four channels will be available on the DD Free Dish platform or not. Because, the IBF said that these four channels will be offered free to air for a two-month period at no cost to all cable and dth viewers, but about DD Free Dish it is not clearly mentioned.
Any channel on DD Free Dish will come only through an online e-auction and Prasar Bharati held the 44th online e-auction last month for the DD Free Dish platform. A total of 53 channels have won the slots that will start on dd free dish w.e.f. 1st April 2020. However, Prasar Bharati also released a notification for another e-auction a week earlier, but due to lockdown, that e-auction has been canceled. Therefore, it is uncertain whether these channels arrive on free dish or not.
The channels may come in the decrypted mode
DD Free Dish users can watch channels only if they are available in decrypted mode. 6 to 7 channels are already being broadcast on the free Dish platform at the Dishtv location which is available on the NSS6 satellite. However, we cannot say anything about it.
